THE INCORRUPTIBLE SEED

INTRODUCTION

Most seeds contain an embryo, food reserves, and a protective coating. Depending on the type of seed, there are various environmental requirements for it to begin to grow or germinate. Seeds often have a limited shelf life and remain dormant until conditions are right to sprout. In order to sprout, most require moisture, oxygen, aeration, a specific temperature, and darkness or light, depending on the seed. Some seeds require a certain period of cold temperature exposure or physical scarification due to hormonal inhibition by abscisic acid (PSU.ed). Some seeds, such as buckwheat, germinate quickly and easily by sowing them on top of the soil. Others, such as okra or cauliflower, may take up to 2 weeks to germinate. As a grower, it requires work to prepare the soil through tilling, fertilizer application, and planting seed. This can become frustrating if the seeds fail to germinate or produce. Bad seeds, animals or pests, weeds, drought, excess rain, etc. can cause failed growth.

MEMORY VERSE

1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.

Biblical Application

Physical seeds may become unviable or corrupted through age or environmental conditions and fail to grow. The seed of God’s Word, whether written or spoken, is incorruptible. Incorruptible (undecaying (in essence or continuance, immortal) is used to describe the Word of God and God himself (1 Timothy 1:17, Strong’s Dictionary). 1 Peter makes it clear believers are born again by the Word of God. He describes us as purifying our souls by obedience to the truth through the Spirit unto sincere love of the brethren (1 Peter 1:22-23). Jesus spoke of various types of soil or ground in the parable of the sower. He said the sower soweth the Word or Word of the kingdom (Mark 4:14, Matthew 13:19). The success or failure of to bring forth fruit was unrelated to the Word, but directly correlated with the ground. As long as the Word of God is being sown, then fruit production will occur if it is planted on good ground. The Lord made it clear that his Word will go forth and accomplish what he pleases and prosper in the thing where he sent it (Isaiah 55:11). Many churches have replaced the preaching and teaching of the Word with concerts, humanistic programs that appeal to emotions. The body of Christ has a responsibility to ensure that God’s Word is what is being sown.

Sow the word.  —  Mark 4:1-10; Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23.

Tare grows with wheat.  —  Matthew 13:24-30.

Everyday Life Application

What are some of the things that have replaced the Word in churches today? Is another gospel being preached by some?
